Why should I open a charitable fund?

When they open a charitable fund at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation, our donors’ giving is streamlined and their recordkeeping is simplified. One donation to a charitable fund allows them to give to multiple nonprofits over time, with only one transaction to track for the IRS. We accept a wide variety of assets that most nonprofits are not able to. Further, we can provide anonymity for donors, if requested, and serve as a philanthropic advisor to help our donors connect with nonprofits working on causes they care about.

We offer highly personalized philanthropic services and tailor funds to each of our donor’s unique charitable interests. Importantly, we are a local organization with deep roots in the community and our expert team is happy to connect our donors with high-impact organizations that are addressing community needs.

What can I give to open a fund? What is the minimum?

Our team members are experts in identifying the most effective charitable solutions for the assets you to give. We have in-house expertise to process complex gifts and will work with you and your financial advisors to build a charitable fund that achieves your philanthropic goals. Types of assets we accept include cash, stocks and other appreciated assets, business interests, real estate, retirement assets, and estate assets. See Ways to Give.

The minimum contribution to set up most charitable funds is $10,000; the minimum to establish a Scholarship Fund is $25,000. To endow your charitable fund, the minimum contribution is $50,000. Legacy Funds, which are established through the commitment of planned gifts, are opened at no cost.

What are my investment options?

Charitable funds at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation are invested in our professionally managed investment pools, designed to fit your time horizons and giving goals. See Investment Portfolios.

What administration do you provide? And what are your fees?

With our commitment to delivering world-class philanthropy, we offer a variety of support services to donors, based on their fund type. In general, we handle all back office support for your charitable fund. In most cases, you will have access to our online donor portal, where our team will update you with information on contributions, awards (as applicable), investment earnings, and more. In addition, we are happy to conduct research on your behalf, promote grant or scholarship opportunities (as applicable), and manage due diligence to ensure compliance. Our Philanthropy Team is available during office hours to respond to your questions and needs.

Our competitive support fees offset the cost of fund administration. They are also reinvested in the Sacramento region through our grantmaking and programs — attending to critical regional issues, improving local lives, and multiplying the impact of your giving. Support fees vary based on fund type and, in some cases, on the size of the fund. See our fee schedule.

What's your service area?

Based in Sacramento, we proudly serve philanthropists and nonprofit leaders across California’s four-county capital region: El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, and Yolo counties. Our staff bring deep expertise in the social impact sector within these communities and are delighted to offer personalized recommendations to fundholders about organizations to support. Through our community leadership and discretionary grantmaking, we also reinvest support fees back into these counties, providing staff support, programming like Big Day of Giving, and more.

While our primary focus is strengthening the Sacramento region, our fundholders have the flexibility to recommend grants to qualified nonprofits nationwide.

Can I make a difference without a charitable fund?

If you aren’t yet ready to establish your personalized charitable fund, consider a gift to our community’s Impact Fund. By contributing to the Impact Fund at your preferred level, you can join the Impact Collaborative, a community of like-minded changemakers dedicated to building a vibrant and equitable region for all. You’ll also gain access to gatherings and seminars.
